MÁS per Mallorca registers a law to ensure that the Islands are not "complicit in warmongering"

The proposal aims to establish a framework for public action to promote coexistence, peaceful conflict resolution, human rights and disarmament in the Balearic Islands.

PalmMÁS per Mallorca has registered a proposed law in the Balearic Parliament to promote peace and a culture of non-violence, aiming to establish a framework for public action to foster coexistence, peaceful conflict resolution, human rights, and disarmament. The initiative comes in an international context that the eco-sovereignists define as a "global escalation of war," marked by an increase in armed conflicts, the normalization of war rhetoric, and the strengthening of rearmament policies. According to Lluís Apesteguia, spokesperson for MÉS per Mallorca, this scenario "is of particular concern to us as a society and as a people, including in Mallorca."

Apesteguia warned that violence and war are becoming entrenched as a "tool for relations between peoples," a view that has been adopted not only by international actors but also, she said, by governments. "We have witnessed positions in which war, genocide, extermination, and the annihilation of innocent people are presented as legitimate responses, even as rational options," she denounced. Deputy Marta Carrió, author of the legislative proposal, warned that there is currently "an increase in warmongering, a military escalation, and the strengthening of rearmament policies, with open armed conflicts and the normalization of the discourse of war as a tool for conflict resolution." Faced with this reality, Apesteguia argued that "committing to peace is today an act of political and democratic responsibility." In this regard, he emphasized that "this law aims to be a useful tool so that the Balearic Islands are not complicit in warmongering, but rather role models for an active, critical, and committed culture of peace."

Respect for human rights

The proposed law defines peace not only as the absence of war, but also as the effective presence of social justice, equal opportunities, environmental sustainability, and respect for human rights. Based on this vision, it proposes concrete actions for all levels of government in the Balearic Islands in areas such as peace education, mediation and coexistence, public awareness, international cooperation, the role of the media, and the promotion of disarmament and human security. Among the main innovations is the creation of the Balearic Council for Peace and the Culture of Nonviolence, an advisory body for social participation, as well as the periodic development of a Balearic Master Plan for Peace and Coexistence, which will establish objectives, resources, and lines of action. Apesteguia reminded everyone that "the Balearic Islands are not yet a sovereign state, but within the powers we have, there is much work to be done," and pointed out that as long as there are people who defend war as a tool for interaction, "there must also be those who defend peace, non-violence, and the right to life." The initiative, which the eco-sovereignist spokesperson already announced during the last general policy debate, coincides with the week of the School Day of Non-violence and Peace, which will be celebrated next Friday. In addition to the parliamentary procedure, MÉS per Mallorca will carry out and participate in various symbolic actions during these days, such as the lighting of light displays and a colloquium on the future of the Son Sant Joan military ammunition depot, with the aim of reinforcing the message of peace and civic engagement.
