The Menorca People's Party (PP) has opened a case against its top official in Mercadal, who was convicted of tripping a family member.

The party proposes to the councilor to remove him from the position of president of the local board and spokesperson for the municipal group, but he clings to the position and leaves it in the hands of his partners at Entesa.

PalmThe Menorca People's Party (PPP) will open an internal investigation into its president in Mercadal and Fornells, who is also the spokesperson and first deputy mayor of the municipality, Cristóbal David Pons, after learning from ARA Baleares that he had been convicted of a crime of bodily harm.

The conservative party has referred the case to the Rights and Guarantees Committee for an assessment of the measures to be taken, which has not ruled out asking Pons to return the councilor's seat he won in the 2023 elections. Meanwhile, at an extraordinary meeting of the party's local board this Thursday morning, he was asked to abandon the resignations that would have satisfied the PP. But Tóbal Pons has chosen to hold on to the position and leave the solution in the hands of his partners at Entesa.

The news of the court ruling, reported by this newspaper, has taken both the PP and the town's mayor, Joan Palliser, of Entesa, by surprise. Neither of the two parties, which are linked in the municipal government, were aware of the Ciutadella court's ruling.

The PP says that with its decision it "reaffirms" its "commitment to exemplarity, transparency, and respect for the ethical values that should govern political action." The PP's Code of Ethics, it points out, "establishes clear mechanisms to ensure that the conduct of all our representatives conforms to the highest levels of responsibility."

The PSOE, in opposition, has called on the councilor to resign via social media. "It's the best thing he could do for the municipality," the Socialists point out, criticizing the fact that Pons "is more in the news for what he does outside of City Hall than for what he should be doing for the municipality."
