PalmThe People's Party (PP) intends to extend the pilot program for transporting manure from Ibiza and Formentera to Palma to 10 years. This was denounced on Wednesday by MÁS per Mallorca, who warned that the proposal was introduced through an amendment to the draft law on accelerating strategic projects, disguising a change in the model as a simple technical modification.

The amendment stipulates that the agreement between the island councils regulating the measure must have a minimum duration of 10 years, including the trial period. For MÁS, this completely distorts the concept of a "trial" and reveals the intention to turn a temporary initiative into a permanent solution.

"The PP is trying to sneak in a decision that mortgages Mallorca for a decade. It's not a pilot program: it's a disguised change of model that consolidates the importation of waste," stressed MP Ferran Rosa. The spokesperson for MÉS in the Consell de Mallorca, Catalina Inés Perelló, added that "the island cannot bear the burden of other institutions' planning errors" and described extending the trial to 10 years as "an outrage and an environmental and territorial irresponsibility."

Environmental consequences

The party and GOB Eivissa have spoken out in the same vein and warned of the negative effects of this measure: increased incineration at Son Reus, greater ash generation, a reduction in the lifespan of Mallorca's landfills, and environmental pressure on the island. The environmentalist spokesperson, Juan Carlos Palermo, maintains that "these solutions cannot be improvised without addressing the real problem: waste management in Ibiza." They also warn that it would consolidate a model dependent on waste burning, contrary to the island's sustainability goals. Additionally, MÉS criticized the stance of the president of the Consell de Mallorca, Llorenç Galmés, whom they accuse of maintaining a "passive" attitude and being a "silent accomplice" in an operation that could harm Mallorca's environment. For all these reasons, MÁS will demand the withdrawal of the amendment and maintains that any decision regarding waste management must be made based on environmental criteria, rigorous planning, and transparency, avoiding impositions that compromise the island's future.
