PalmaThe Joint Commission on Insularity of Congress and the Senate approved this Tuesday an initiative presented by the deputy of MÉS per Mallorca and MÉS per Menorca in the Plurinational Sumar Group, Vicenç Vidal, which expresses rejection of any expansion of the capacity of Ibiza airport.

The proposal went ahead after an agreement between Sumar, the PSOE and the PP, which incorporated amendments to the initial text. As Vidal explained, the objective was to transfer the debate on the future of the airport infrastructure to Congress and to urge the central Government and AENA to discard projects that involve an increase in the operational capacity of the airport.

The approved text urges a review of both the airport's Master Plan and the Airport Regulation Document (DORA III) to prevent them from contemplating future capacity increases. Likewise, it proposes that the actions carried out at the infrastructure be limited to issues related to safety, accessibility, energy efficiency, working conditions, and quality of service.

The initiative also calls for AENA to incorporate criteria of sustainability, carrying capacity, and social cohesion in the planning of its actions, as well as greater participation of local, island, and regional institutions in monitoring projects affecting the airport.

After the approval, Vidal highlighted that the consensus reached reinforces the institutional position against an increase in airport capacity in Ibiza, although he warned that it will be necessary to ensure that the approved agreements translate into effective decisions by the State and AENA.
