Cladera (PSIB): "The import of waste from Ibiza must be stopped"
The socialists reproach Galmés for not guaranteeing "a clean transfer" of the garbage
Palma"The import of waste from Ibiza must be stopped". This is how the spokesperson for the PSIB in the Consell Insular de Mallorca, Catalina Cladera, expressed herself this Thursday, after the institution opened the agreement file so that Ibiza can send approximately 97,000 tons of waste per year to Mallorca. As explained by ARA Balears, Mallorca has lowered the environmental requirements to import this waste because Ibiza has argued that it does not have the technical capacity to do so under the initially required conditions.
"The president of the Consell d'Eivissa, Vicent Marí, imposes the transfer of waste to Mallorca and makes [Marga] Prohens impose it on [Llorenç] Galmés", said Cladera. "It is an attack on the environment and a capitulation by Galmés", she lamented, and criticized that "the conditions" of the transport "are imposed by Eivissa". "It does not have the machinery, means and resources to package the waste and now it is enabled for them to come unpackaged", she questioned. "This cannot be allowed in any way", insisted the socialist: "If there is no clean transfer of waste, we don't want it".
"Mallorca cannot accept an unsafe transfer"
For their part, the PSIB island councilor Joana Maria Adrover has lashed out at the Minister of Environment, Pedro Bestard: "He lied, first he said that waste would not be imported from Ibiza and then he changed his mind". Adrover has pointed out that the transfer is being formalized without imposing a limit on the duration of the pilot plan beyond Ibiza drafting a waste management master plan. She also recalled that Son Reus's capacity has been established exclusively based on reports from the company that manages the incinerator, TIRME, which is private. She also regretted that there is "no clear protocol to act in case of breakdown". "Mallorca is supportive, but it cannot accept an uncontrolled, insecure, and non-transparent transfer", she lamented.
