Accuse tourists of taking advantage of free public transport with resident cards
The deputy of MÉS per Mallorca, Ferran Rosa, has asked the Minister of Mobility to intensify controls to prevent these infractions
PalmaThe parliamentary group MÉS per Mallorca has denounced in Parliament the allegedly irregular use of interurban public transport cards (TIB) by tourists, despite these being personal and non-transferable tickets linked to residence in the Balearic Islands.
During a parliamentary commission appearance, Rosa asked the Minister of Mobility to intensify controls to prevent these types of infractions. The deputy also criticized the lack of response to previously formulated questions on this matter.
According to the representative of Més per Mallorca, the situation constitutes a “generalized fraud” and considers the 45 annual controls carried out on a network that registers around 29 million users to be “clearly insufficient”. Rosa assured that the improper use of cards occurs recurrently on several TIB lines, where some tourists allegedly use resident passes, sometimes even hiding the holder's photograph.
Among the lines pointed out by the deputy are 204 (Sóller), 103 (Peguera), 104 (Magaluf), 301 (Pollença), and 501 (Campos), where, according to her denunciation, these practices would be common. The deputy also criticized that, while residents face delays in obtaining the single card, some visitors could access free transport by borrowing cards. In this regard, she accused the Balearic Government of “inaction” in the face of this situation. The case has reopened the debate on the control of public transport tickets and the need to strengthen verification mechanisms to ensure their correct use.
