Anti-fascist graffiti at La Feixina before the ultra rally in Palma
The monolith has appeared with messages against racism and fascism amidst the tension between far-right groups and anti-fascist collectives
PalmaThe monolith of La Feixina in Palma appeared this Saturday with several anti-fascist graffiti, amid controversy over the call for a rally planned for this Sunday, May 24. On the facade of the monolith, the messages 'Racism, fascism neither now nor ever' and 'Never again' can be read, accompanied by an anarchist symbol.
The action comes after the far-right group Núcleo Nacional announced a rally at La Feixina against the possible demolition of the monument, linked to the application of the Democratic Memory Law. The collective, of neo-Nazi inspiration, defends the monolith dedicated to the dead of the cruiser Baleares and accuses the Spanish government of wanting to "erase history".
The call has generated a strong response from anti-fascist groups in Mallorca, who have warned of the "openly neo-Nazi" character of Núcleo Nacional and have called for rejecting their presence in Palma. They also recall that the group has staged several acts of vandalism and hate messages in recent months, including graffiti on the bust of Aurora Picornell and in natural spaces in Mallorca.
The Feixina monument has been the subject of political and social debate in Palma for years. The new escalation of tension comes on the eve of a mobilization that could reactivate the confrontation between ultra-right groups and anti-fascist collectives in the city.
Court condemns the graffiti
The Palma City Council on Sunday condemned “with the utmost firmness” the vandalism against the Feixina monument and its surroundings and assured that it will restore the affected area “in the shortest possible time”.
In a statement, Cort stressed that it cannot accept “unconditionally or with any justification” these types of uncivil actions and announced that it will work to return the monument and its surroundings to their original appearance.
The monument has for days appeared vandalized with the graffiti 'Racism never again, fascism neither now, nor ever', accompanied by the anarchist symbol. In addition, the water surrounding the structure, where some ducks swim, had an intense red color.
The Consistory has also made available to the security forces any information that may be useful for the investigation, clarification of the facts, and the determination of responsibilities.
