ARCA approves the renovation of the Terminus building: "It respects its historical values."
The entity has valued that the collapsed part of the air raid shelter has been recovered.
PalmThe Association for the Defense of Mallorca's Heritage (ARCA) has stated that the renovation and adaptation work on the Terminus building is producing an "attractive" result that "respects its historical values."
This is what the organization said after visiting the work being carried out by SFM on the historic building. The project's lead architect, Martí Lucena, and SFM archaeologist, Maria Antònia Fernández Pizá, led the visit and explained the details of the adaptation to the new uses.
In this sense, they argued that the structure on iron pillars that are transformed into wood, the entire framework of beams (although some were replaced) respecting the materials, the conservation of the staircase, and the preservation of some sections of hydraulic brick help give the sensation of entering a historic building. At the same time, the windows have been reproduced and the roof has been respected.
ARCA had presented a proposal to preserve the fundamental details of the building, which have been "largely" assumed; in addition, SFM is committed to "preserving and restoring some of the interior furnishings." "There is no doubt that one of the greatest attractions of the new Termín building will be being able to visit the air-raid shelter that is being restored. SFM's efforts in this task must be recognized, since there was a collapse in one section and its recovery was very difficult, but they have achieved it," they emphasized.
However, they do regret that the ceramic tiles on the walls of the former bar-restaurant have not been preserved, since due to the new height of the space, "it has not been possible to do so." The Terminus Hotel, later known as the hostel, was a hotel built in 1913 by the Mallorca Railway Company. Its proximity to the railway lines allowed hotel guests to connect with the different towns of Mallorca. Although it was built later on the passenger and administration buildings, which were located on the same line as the Terminus, it reproduces the same stylistic and decorative features.
