PalmaThe end of the tourist season has begun with a trickle of labor sanctions in the Pityusic Islands that, according to CCOO, are being used to reduce staff. The union assures that since mid-August it has been recording an average of two or three sanctions per day, especially in the hospitality sector.

CCOO denounces that some companies are resorting to "sanctioning engineering" to accumulate warnings for workers and end up justifying a disciplinary dismissal, without having to assume any severance pay. According to the union, the sanctions in many cases respond to "absurd or disproportionate" motives.

The organization points out that this practice has intensified coinciding with the end of the strongest months of the summer and that it is also spreading to other sectors. According to CCOO, companies take advantage of the fact that many sanctions are not challenged due to fear of conflict or lack of time, thus building a disciplinary record that can end in dismissal in a few weeks.

"Many companies are resorting to sanctioning engineering instead of processing the dismissals that correspond by law, thus avoiding their financial responsibilities," the union denounces.

CCOO considers that these are not isolated cases, but rather a practice that, according to its report, aims to reduce personnel once the tourist season is over. "We are facing a massive employer strategy to fire workers for free in Ibiza and Formentera at the end of the summer," it states.

The union recommends that affected workers, when receiving a sanction, write "not in agreement" on it, in addition to the time and date, and that they demand a signed and sealed copy. It also advises challenging the sanctions to prevent them from accumulating in the disciplinary record, especially when the deadline to present allegations is short.
