PalmThe ARCA association has expressed its outright rejection of the building proposed by the new concessionaire for the fishing area of the port of Palma, an initiative it considers "unacceptable" due to its strong landscape impact on the maritime facade of the historic center.

Fishing Bar Project

According to a statement released by the organization, Palma "does not need a building deliberately designed to be extremely visible" on the port's waterfront, in a particularly sensitive location just meters from the Lonja (fish market) and with the Cathedral as a backdrop. ARCA denounces the proposal as an "aesthetic colonization" of the city's historical image and an attempt to visually compete with emblematic buildings such as the Lonja and the Consolat de Mar. The heritage association considers the structure "disproportionate" and aesthetically out of place within a consolidated historical ensemble. Furthermore, it criticizes the project's attempt to justify itself with a "sentimental argument" based on references to ships and nets, an approach that, in its view, fails to address the actual impact on the urban landscape. ARCA also lashes out at the Port Authority, accusing it of having been guided "solely by economic criteria" without taking into account its role in protecting Palma's heritage. In this regard, the organization calls the decision "irresponsible." Given this situation, ARCA demands the withdrawal of the project and insists that any future bidding process require minimal intervention that does not negatively impact the landscape. "It's time a few stopped profiting from our fundamental asset: the sea, our history, our cityscape, and our heritage," the statement reads. The organization has announced that it will contact all the administrations involved with the aim of preventing the project from moving forward.
