CCOO believes that it "makes no sense" that there are more vacant homes in the Balearic Islands than rental homes.
The union believes the percentage of home purchases in the Balearic Islands by foreigners is "very high" and criticized the fact that some of these purchases are made "as investments."

PalmThe CCOO (City of Workers' Party) called this Friday for intervention in the housing market, especially in the regulation of purchases by foreigners, since, in their view, "it makes no sense" that there are more vacant properties in the Balearic Islands than rentals. This was the statement made by the Secretary of Public Policies and Social Protection of the CCOO, Carlos Bravo, in a statement to the media.
For the CCOO representative, the percentage of home purchases in the Balearic Islands by foreigners is "very high" and he criticized the fact that some of these acquisitions are made "as investments." Similarly, Bravo advocated for a reform to the state Housing Law that would allow city councils to declare areas under straitjacket conditions to limit rental prices, without depending on the autonomous communities.
This demand is due to the fact that, following the 2023 elections, this state law is being boycotted by the autonomous communities governed by the PP. In this regard, he emphasized that there have already been some changes because the Galician Regional Government—governed by the People's Party (PP)—has already allowed A Coruña—governed by the Socialist Workers' Party (PSdeG)—to declare itself a tense zone, and he noted that the Balearic Islands meet "all the requirements" to be declared a tense zone.
