PalmaThe judicial bodies of the Balearic Islands received 2,025 complaints for gender-based violence during the first quarter of 2026, 29.6% more than in the same period last year. The number of women who reported as victims also grew, reaching 1,799, 25.3% more than a year earlier, according to data released this Monday by the Observatory against Domestic and Gender Violence of the General Council of the Judiciary.

Of the 1,799 women who reported being victims of gender-based violence, 961 were from Spain and 838 were foreign. In addition, the complaints allowed for the identification of five minors as victims, three of whom were Spanish.

The Balearic Islands continue to be among the territories with the highest incidence of this type of violence. The rate of reporting victims was 28.7 per 10,000 women, well above the state average, which stands at 18.1%. Only Navarra (24.5), the Canary Islands (23.4), and the Valencian Community (23) also clearly surpassed the Spanish average, albeit with lower records than those of the Archipelago.

More than 15% of victims renounced to testify

The report also indicates that 283 women, 15.73% of the total victims, took advantage of the legal exemption that allows them not to testify against the alleged aggressor. This figure represents an increase of 17.4% compared to the first quarter of 2025. Of these women, 146 were Spanish and 137 had other nationalities.

Regarding protection measures, specialized and on-duty courts received 356 requests for protection orders or other precautionary measures, of which 287 were granted.

Specifically, the specialized sections on violence against women processed 326 petitions and approved 260. For their part, the on-duty sections received 30 requests and authorized 27. According to the General Council of the Judiciary, at the state level, 20.47 protection orders were issued for every 100 women victims of gender-based violence during the first quarter of 2026.
