Police violence in Palma against migrants: a video shows blows to a person immobilized on the ground

PalmaAn operation by the Local Police of Palma against a group of migrant people has generated a strong controversy due to the forcefulness of the intervention. In the video images, a group of police officers charges against several people until they throw one to the ground and hit her repeatedly.
Following the dissemination of the video, MÉS per Palma has requested the appearance of the mayor, Jaime Martínez, and those responsible for Citizen Security, in addition to an immediate investigation.
The spokesperson for MÉS per Palma, Neus Truyol, states that the intervention appears "clearly disproportionate" and maintains that it does not comply with the principles of proportionality, necessity, and respect for human rights that must govern the actions of security forces.
Furthermore, the party accuses the municipal government of PP-Vox of criminalizing and stigmatizing migrants and other vulnerable groups, and demands that the facts be clarified, responsibilities be investigated, and that all police actions are carried out with full respect for human dignity and democratic principles.
The City Council defends police action and denounces assaults on officers
The Palma City Council has responded to the controversy generated by the dissemination of videos of the police intervention on Palma Beach against illegal street vending. The City Council assures that the images that have circulated only show part of the operation and do not include "the episodes of aggressiveness, threats, and resistance" that, according to its defense, occurred against the agents.
According to the municipal version, the action, framed within the special summer device of Tourist Security (Setur), resulted in the arrest of two people for alleged crimes of assault against agents of authority, serious resistance, and injury.
During the operation, two local police officers were injured. In addition, the City Council assures that, at a later stage of the intervention, a group of between eight and ten street vendors surrounded the agents and threw stones and cobblestones at them, which passed close to their heads.
The City Council emphasizes that the operation allowed the dismantling of six illegal street vending points and the seizure of materials intended for sale. Likewise, it has condemned the assaults on the officers and has claimed the police work to guarantee coexistence and security in the area.
Cort denounces a new attack
The Palma City Council has reported that an agent was assaulted this Tuesday during an operation against street vending in the Hort del Rei area. According to the municipal version, the events occurred around 6 p.m. when the Local Police were seizing material intended for illegal sale and some vendors reacted violently. During the incident, a police vehicle was also hit and one person was arrested.
The City Council frames these events within the increase in operations against street vending in different parts of the city. This is not the first episode of this nature in recent weeks. The first deputy mayor, Javier Bonet, has expressed support for the agents involved and has defended the actions of the Local Police in the context of compliance with municipal ordinances.
