PalmThe debate on the situation of healthcare in the Balearic Islands has reached the Parliament of the Balearic Islands this week, but the statements made during the session have generated a response from Doctors of the World. The organization has denounced that erroneous ideas about healthcare for the migrant population have been disseminated and has warned that some interventions are based on “falsities” or ignorance of reality.

According to the organization, linking healthcare pressure with the immigrant population does not correspond to objective data. In fact, they emphasize that irregular migrant individuals represent a very small portion of the archipelago's total population and therefore cannot solely explain the difficulties of the healthcare system.

Doctors of the World also point out that there are no studies in the Balearic Islands to demonstrate that the migrant population makes more intensive use of healthcare services. On the contrary, they explain that research conducted in other autonomous communities indicates that this group tends to use healthcare resources less than the native population.

The entity believes that these types of statements can contribute to generating a mistaken perception of reality and asks that the political debate be based on verified data. In this regard, they also recall that access to healthcare is a basic right and that questioning it based on incorrect information can have significant social consequences.

Therefore, Doctors of the World has issued a call to political forces and social agents to avoid disseminating unsubstantiated messages and to advocate for a rigorous debate on the real challenges of the healthcare system in the Balearic Islands.
