PalmThe town councils of Mallorca will have to designate a specific area within each municipality so that residents can gather to view the solar eclipse on August 12th, an exceptional astronomical phenomenon that can be observed under very good conditions from the island. This was agreed upon at the last meeting of FELIB (Federation of Local Entities of the Balearic Islands) with municipal representatives, where the need to organize the eclipse viewing in an orderly and safe manner was discussed, taking into account the expected large crowds.

Map of the points

According to the plan presented, each municipality will choose a public space within its boundaries—such as a square, a sports center, an elevated area, or an open space—with good visibility to the west, given that the eclipse will occur shortly before sunset. Subsequently, a committee of experts will evaluate whether the chosen space is suitable for observing the phenomenon, both from a technical and safety standpoint. Once the space has been definitively approved, the public will be encouraged to use these official viewing points to observe the eclipse, with the aim of avoiding disorderly gatherings and potential mobility or safety problems. One of the examples mentioned during the meeting was Mount Randa in Algaida, a location that is also expected to be very crowded on August 12. This is a point that the IAAM Foundation (Foundation of the Institute of Astronomy and Astronautics of Mallorca) identifies as problematic, as are the other two elevations in the Plan, such as Bonany in Petra and Mount Sant Miquel in Montuïri. In these cases, in addition to the town councils, the Consell's Department of Roads will also be responsible for managing access. along the road that climbs into the hills, regulating traffic and the flow of vehicles.

The solar eclipse of August 12, 2026, will be visible in its totality phase from Mallorca for more than a minute, making it an exceptional astronomical event and a unique opportunity for scientific outreach and citizen participation across the island.
