PalmaOn Monday, the Kabul case, one of the largest drug trafficking judicial processes in the Balearic Islands, came to an end. As reported by 'Última Hora', the Supreme Court has set the sentences for the main defendants in the case at 5 and a half years in prison: La Paca, her sons Ico and M.F. C.

Of the 55 defendants who have been tried since 2013, 29 have ended up convicted. In addition, after the operation carried out by the Civil Guard, major suppliers of narcotic substances from the settlement were also accused.

The Kabul case

This ending has come after five years of controversy, acquittals and surprises. In 2013, the first time the accused sat on the bench, The Audiencia of Palma acquitted Paca and 39 other defendants. The court declared the telephone conversations on which the accusation against him and the majority of the 50 defendants was based null and void. The Court considered that the investigating judge had not sufficiently argued the recording of the calls and that he had not even followed the alleged traffickers.

After this blow, the Prosecutor's Office appealed and in 2015 the Supreme Court decided to give life back to the case and declared valid the telephone conversations that, initially, had been rejected. In this way, thePalma Provincial Court sentenced 35 people to sentences of between 2 and 6.6 years for drug trafficking. Among those convicted were Francisca Cortés 'la Paca', ex-matriarch of Son Banya, and two of her children, to six years in prison and a fine of 900,000 euros.

Now, the new Supreme Court ruling has finalized the convictions with some adjustments and all that remains is to wait and see if the defense teams could attempt a final appeal before the Constitutional Court.
