Families from Son Bordoy protest in Cort against their eviction: "We want to live like human beings, not on the street"
They demand solutions at Palma City Hall
PalmSeveral members of the families who are expected to be evicted from the substandard housing in Son Bordoy, where they have lived for years, spoke at the Palma City Council plenary session this Thursday to protest their situation and demand alternative housing. According to Ángela Pons, spokesperson for the Platform of People Affected by Mortgages (PAH) of Mallorca, during her brief speech, the eviction would leave approximately 200 people homeless, including some with disabilities and minors. Raúl, a man who has lived and is registered as a resident of Son Bordoy for 27 years, explained that the Palma City Council "suddenly" arrived with a notification demanding they vacate their homes within ten days. "We are people and we want to live like people; we don't want to be on the street," he said. Eduardo, another resident of Son Bordoy, thanked the City Council for the help they have received over the years and asked for assistance in finding alternative housing. Another resident, who did not identify herself, expressed a similar sentiment. "We're not doing anything illegal. This used to be a field, and we built these houses with our own hands. If this was illegal, they should have kicked us out after we laid the first brick," she stated. She also criticized the fact that municipal officials showed up on the land on a Friday with a court order for them to vacate the homes the following Monday without offering any alternative. "We need to find a solution; we can't afford a house," she pointed out. Finally, Pons criticized the municipal government for its "lack of political will" to find a housing solution for these 200 people. Two weeks ago, Neus Truyol, spokesperson for MÉS per Palma, accused the City Council of having forged an "alliance" with a real estate developer to evict these people and allow the construction of a new housing development in Son Bordoy. The eco-sovereignist explained that these people have been living in substandard housing for years, after having been previously evicted from the Can Pere Antoni area for building and moving into other apartment blocks.
