PalmThe General Council of the Judiciary (CGPJ) has appointed Judge Gabriel Oliver as the new president of the Provincial Court of Palma. Oliver currently serves as a judge in the Fourth Section of the Provincial Court, a Civil Division.

This was approved this Wednesday at the plenary session of the CGPJ, which announced its decision, given that the position had been vacant since Judge Diego Gómez-Reino joined the Civil and Criminal Division of the High Court of Justice of the Balearic Islands (TSJIB) and was provisionally filled by the most senior judge, 2022, according to the TSJIB.

The new president of the Provincial Court joined the judiciary in 1994 and his first posting was the Court of First Instance and Investigation of Ripoll, Catalonia. However, they pointed out that his professional career has been especially linked to the Balearic Islands, the territory where his family is originally from and where he has lived since childhood.

After serving in the Courts of First Instance and Investigation of Manacor from 1995 to 1998 and in Inca from 1998 to 1999, Oliver rose from judge to magistrate in Barcelona. Shortly after, in 2001, he returned to head the Court of First Instance No. 8 of Palma.

After serving in single-member courts, Oliver joined the Third Section of the Provincial Court in 2012 and the Fourth Section in 2019. In fact, the Provincial Court is the post where he has held the longest period of service.

Oliver studied law at the University of the Balearic Islands (UIB) and has his specialization in Balearic Civil Law recognized by the CGPJ. The civil lawyer participated in the working group that developed the TSJIB Good Practices Guide in 2022. He has also been the Risk Prevention Delegate since 2014 and coordinator of the decentralized Continuing Education plan for the judicial career in the Canary Islands since 2019.

In the plenary session, judges Andrés Martínez Arrieta and Pablo, from the Criminal and Administrative Chambers of the Supreme Court (TS), respectively, were ratified, positions they already held on an interim basis, after the withdrawal of their only opponents, Ana Ferrer and Pilar Teso, in order to unblock both appointments to key positions.
