Hundreds of people mobilize in Selva to defend public access to the Serra de Tramuntana
Cyclists and mountain sports enthusiasts gather to collect signatures against the draft law's restrictions and to advocate for the conservation of public paths
PalmMore than a hundred cyclists and mountain sportsmen gathered this Saturday in Selva to claim the right to public access to the Serra de Tramuntana and show their rejection of the restrictions contemplated in the draft law being prepared by the Consell de Mallorca.
The meeting, organized by the association Dret de Pas, also served to collect signatures in favor of the allegations presented to the regulatory project. Among these, it is requested to eliminate limitations considered “disproportionate”, prioritize the recovery and cataloging of public roads, and base the regulations on technical criteria and scientific evidence.
The spokesperson for the entity, Josep Maria Estopà, highlighted to Europa Press the high participation in the association's first activity, with between 150 and 200 people, and emphasized the festive nature of the gathering. The event culminated with the reading of a manifesto in which they warn that the future law, in its current wording, will mean “a profound change in the relationship between citizens and the territory”.
According to the organizers, the project introduces a system based “on general prohibition”, imposes bureaucratic procedures that are difficult or impossible to comply with, generates duplications with existing regulations on public roads, and could limit social access to the Serra. In particular, they have expressed concern about the regulation of mountain biking, which could be restricted only to itineraries expressly authorized by the administration, due to the need to request permits to circulate on private estates.
Dret de Pas argues that sporting and recreational uses are compatible with the conservation of heritage and that there is no scientific evidence to justify restrictions on cycling practice. According to the entity, the main factors of road erosion are rain, runoff, and lack of maintenance, not sporting activity.
