Ibiza teachers denounce pressure from the regional government over an event supporting Palestine.
Teachers claim the right to freely express their social commitment and remember that education must promote values such as peace.
PalmTeachers at the Algarb de Sant Jordi High School in Sant Josep de la Frontera reported Wednesday that the Regional Ministry of Education and Universities has requested explanations and issued a formal warning after participating in an event with the school in support of Palestine on September 15.
The teachers, two of whom were summoned by the Education Inspectorate, reject what they consider a "threat and blackmail" by the administration and maintain that the event took place off school grounds and during recess.
The teachers assert the right to freely express their social commitment and emphasize that education should foster values such as peace, respect, critical thinking, and solidarity, as stipulated in the laws and the educational curriculum.
Finally, they emphasized that the IES Algarb is a center "active and involved" in social and humanitarian causes, and that in the past it has organized similar activities against gender violence, in favor of equality, and against the war in Ukraine, among others.
