Mallorca's milk producers call for boycott against Damm: "Don't buy anything from them"

The sector denounces the breach of the milk collection commitment and is forced to send 300,000 liters monthly off the island with extra cost

PalmMallorca's dairy cow producers have made a public call to stop consuming products and boycott the Grup Damm in response to the closure of the Agama plant and the decision to stop collecting milk on the island. The sector considers that the company has breached the commitment made with the farmers, which provided for maintaining collection until September to give them reorganization time.

As explained in a statement, the decision announced on March 3rd “broke the word given to the sector at a particularly delicate moment”. For this reason, the Cooperativa de Vaca Frisona de Mallorca and the Organization of Milk Producers (OPL) have agreed to ask consumers to stop buying products from the multinational.

Starting this week, farms will begin to send their production, which amounts to about 300,000 liters per month, outside of Mallorca. They will do so every two days and will bear the additional cost of transporting the milk off the island, a task that until now was done locally with its processing. The farmers denounce that this provisional departure has a direct impact on farms that are “already very hard hit”.

The sector warns that the situation represents a “serious detriment” to the entire Mallorcan milk production. Not only due to the added logistical and economic cost, but also due to the loss of added value that comes from ceasing to process milk in Mallorca, as well as the blow it represents for farms working in particularly complex conditions.

The producers insist that their decision to promote the boycott “does not respond solely to economic detriment, but also to a matter of respect towards farming families who have been sustaining the island's milk production for years”.

Despite the adverse context, the sector assures that it will focus its efforts on guaranteeing daily milk collection, reorganizing marketing, and seeking some stability for farms. However, they warn that exports outside Mallorca cannot become a structural or definitive solution.

Therefore, they call on society as a whole to support the primary sector and demand a real commitment to local production. "What is at stake is not just the future of a few farms, but the continuity of Mallorca's dairy production," they conclude.

It should be noted that this is not the first case where a collective from the Balearic Islands has called on society to boycott the Damm group. Shortly after the closure of the Agama factory was made public, Joves de Mallorca per la Llengua announced that it will not offer Estrella Damm beer during the Acampallengua on April 11 and 12 at Na Molla park in Manacor. In this case, they stated that the Damm group has shown itself to be "against" the primary sector and the food sovereignty of the Islands. Currently, the youth organization is seeking alternative options to Damm for Correllengua 2026.
