PalmMiquel Clar Lladó, the first democratically elected mayor of Llucmajor after the Franco regime, has died at the age of 87. A businessman and politician from the Mallorcan center, he was one of the key figures who spearheaded the institutional transition in the municipality at the dawn of democracy. Born in Llucmajor on December 8, 1938, Clar headed the Union of the Democratic Centre (UCD) list in the 1979 municipal elections, the first democratic ones, and served as mayor until 1983. His term coincided with a period of local self-government after decades of dictatorship. During his time as mayor, the General Urban Development Plan (PGOU) was revised, and facilities such as the municipal sports center and the senior citizens' home were promoted—infrastructure that shaped the municipality's development in the early years of the new democratic era. Later, between 1984 and 1987, he served as a member of the Balearic Islands Parliament for Unió Mallorquina (UM), during an initial legislature focused on consolidating Balearic autonomy. The Llucmajor Town Council has expressed its condolences to the family and announced that a book of condolences will be available at the Town Hall entrance on Wednesday and Thursday, from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. The wake will be held on Thursday afternoon, and the funeral service will take place that same evening. With his death, one of the faces of the first generation of public officials who managed the return of democracy to Mallorcan town halls is lost.
