PalmaA total of 151 personalities and 40 entities from the social, cultural, academic, and neighborhood spheres have expressed their support for the Popular Legislative Initiative (ILP) to create a supplement for pensions in the Balearic Islands that are lower than the Interprofessional Minimum Wage (SMI). For this reason, this Tuesday, dozens of members of the Coordinator for the Defense of Public Pensions, promoter of the legislative initiative in question, gathered at the gates of Parliament.

Among the personalities who have joined the manifesto promoted by the entity are writers Antònia Vicens, Maria Antònia Perelló, and Sebastià Alzamora; the president of the OCB, Antoni Llabrés; the PAH activist Àngela Pons; the LGTBI activist Jan Gómez; the jurist Margalida Capellà; the lawyer Francesca Mas; the mountain runner Tòfol Castanyer, and numerous professors from the UIB.

Also, the entities GOB, PAH, Federation of Neighborhood Associations of Palma, EAPN Balearic Islands, Kellys Unió Balears, Jubilats per Mallorca, CGT, CNT, USO, the Women's Lobby, the Feminist Coordinator, and Terraferida. "The adhesions we have received show that this demand goes far beyond the pensioner movement. Society understands that it is unacceptable for people who have worked all their lives to live on insufficient pensions. Ensuring a dignified life for the elderly is a matter of social justice," stated the spokesperson for the Coordinator, Pep Juárez.

Another of the platform's leaders, Maribel Alcázar, pointed out that it remains necessary for "thousands of people to sign the ILP so that Parliament listens to this social outcry." "We invite all citizens to join this initiative in defense of the dignity, social rights, and well-being of pensioners," she stressed. The IPL proposes that the Government establish a social supplement for people over 60 years of age and those with total permanent disability who receive pensions lower than the SMI and do not have sufficient other income. This proposal, the spokespersons emphasized, seeks to ensure that thousands of people can cope with an ever-increasing cost of living and correct a situation of "inequality" that particularly affects lower pensions and women.
