Pilar Bonet, sentenced to two and a half years in prison for defrauding more than two million euros in Globalia
The former councilor has already acknowledged the facts and this Thursday she ratified the letter of conformity that includes compensation to the company.
PalmThe Palma Court has sentenced the former island councilor to two and a half years in prison. Pilar Bonet for defrauding Globalia of €2.1 million while working there. This Thursday, accompanied by her lawyer, Antoni Martínez, Bonet ratified the agreement reached by both parties and accepted the charges and the two-and-a-half-year prison sentence for having authorized payments through the company to personal accounts or accounts under her control when she served as head of administration and accounting from 2019 to 2023.
As stated in the written agreement, the accused diverted money from the company where she had worked for twenty-six years to a total of 10 current accounts in her name, to two accounts belonging to her children, one of whom was a minor at the time, and to the Juventud Basketball Club, without any of the three account holders being aware of it.
The modus operandi The fraudulent emails consisted of using emails sent by different departments within the company, providing information or requesting payments, in which she introduced changes to alter the company's legal transactions and progressively divert funds. With the modified emails, the defendant managed to bypass the Treasury department, obtaining authorization for payments to the bank accounts she designated. The document highlights that each fraudulent payment generated a debit balance in the company's accounting records.
It should be noted that Bonet has already admitted to the facts and that, according to the psychological expert report, she suffers from an unspecified impulse control disorder and, in particular, compulsive buying disorder, uncontrollable and as an emotional regulation strategy, as well as persistent anxiety-depressive disorder, which is one of the causes. However, in addition to the prison sentence, Bonet must pay Globalia €2,177,200.80 in compensation.
The convicted woman was a Minister of Finance and Public Administration, and after the case became public, the Mallorca Council commissioned the island's technical staff to produce reports on all invoices and contracts. Although the embezzlement allegations that led to her resignation had nothing to do with her public office and refer exclusively to her time there, the institution commissioned these reports to detect any suspicion of fraud.
