Prosecutor Subirán declares that he did not "specifically" commission ex-commissioner Cerdà to speak with the ICO
Miguel Ángel Subirán does admit an informal conversation where he expresses his unease
PalmaTo the direct question of whether the Anti-Corruption Prosecutor's Office had tasked the former judicial police commissioner Antoni Cerdà with meeting the head of a drug clan to gather evidence, Miguel Ángel Subiran answered "no". It was, however, a "no" with nuances, as he acknowledges informal conversations where the prosecutor conveyed his concern to Cerdà and where it can be interpreted that the former police chief would do something about it.
The investigating court number 1 of Palma is investigating whether the former commissioner of the judicial police, Antoni Cerdà, has committed crimes of bribery, money laundering, and disclosure of secrets when he secretly met, and once retired, with one of the leaders of a drug clan from Son Banya, 'el Ico', who at the same time was a protected witness by the anti-corruption prosecutor's office within the Cursach case. During this meeting, an exchange of money for information could have taken place.
According to 'el Ico' it is like this, the former commissioner was charging to intercede before the arrest of his sister, M. F. C. According to the former commissioner, Cerdà was making a request at the request of the Anti-Corruption Prosecutor's Office.
The testimony of prosecutor Miguel Ángel Subiran, who testified before the investigating judge this Friday, denies and does not deny Cerdà's statements. According to judicial sources, Subiran said he did not make a specific request but does acknowledge that during an informal coffee he conveyed his concern because he believed that Ico had some WhatsApps related to the Cursach case that he did not want to hand over to the courts. According to Cerdà, the intention of the meeting being investigated was to obtain them.
This is what the defense of the former commissioner explains, that Cerdà's intention was to gather evidence, but, according to the prosecutor, he did so without an express request, contrary to what he had declared. It was not the first time Cerdà had made this type of request, they have assured.
At the time, the former commissioner handed over a memory stick where it was supposed to be recorded pressures from lawyers related to the Cursach case and which he allegedly gave to Ico, but the pen drive was empty.
In the case, the chief inspector of the judicial police, Antonio Suárez, is also being investigated.
