Roads cut off by the eclipse in Mallorca: restrictions, schedules and exceptions

PalmaMallorca experiences this August 12, 2026, a total solar eclipse that is expected to cause an extraordinary influx of people to different points on the island. To prevent road collapse and ensure safety, the Government and city councils have prepared a special traffic and emergency plan.

The Eclipbal operation includes traffic restrictions on about twenty roads and checks at different points on the island. The measures will particularly affect the Serra de Tramuntana, the coast, and other natural spaces and elevated points where a high concentration of people is expected.

The main restrictions will begin at 3 p.m. and will generally remain in place until 9 p.m., although they may be brought forward if traffic saturation makes it necessary.

Below you can consult the affected roads and access points, the times of the restrictions, and who will be able to access the restricted areas.

The Serra de Tramuntana will be practically closed

Traffic on the main artery of the Serra de Tramuntana will be heavily restricted during the central hours of the eclipse.

• General schedule: restrictions will be activated at 3 p.m. and will remain in place until 9 p.m., although they may be brought forward if the roads fill up beforehand.
• Affected vehicles: the access prohibition will affect motor vehicles, including motorcycles and mopeds.
• Main road: the restriction will particularly affect the Ma-10.
• Access to the paths and roads leading to the Cap de Formentor will also be controlled.

Special restrictions at Playa de Palma

Palma beach will be one of the areas in Mallorca with the most specific mobility measures. The Government has planned access and parking restrictions in the area in coordination with the Palma City Council's device.

• From 12 noon: exits 6, 7A, 8, 11 and 12 of the Ma-19 towards Llucmajor will be closed.
• Between 8 a.m. and 12 p.m.: access to certain points on the first line will be subject to controls and entry will only be permitted in cases provided for by the device.

Restrictions may be intensified if traffic saturation increases.

Calvià will control access to Santa Ponça and the viewpoints

Calvià will deploy a special mobility and security device for the eclipse.

Santa Ponça beach has been designated as Calvià's Official Observation Zone (ZOO), one of the 26 zones enabled by the Government in the Balearic Islands. The City Council will control its capacity and will close access when maximum capacity is reached.close access when maximum capacity is reached.

Access to the puig de la Morisca and the main viewpoints of the municipality will also be prohibited, including those of El Toro and the Malgrats Islands.

The City Council will permanently monitor the traffic situation and may establish additional restrictions before the scheduled time if the situation requires it.

Closures on the coast, beaches, and elevated points

The restrictions will not be limited to Tramuntana. The Government's device also provides for control measures in different natural spaces and elevated points of Mallorca.

Among the affected areas are:

• Cap de les Salines
• El Trenc
• White Cape
• The hermitage of Betlem, in Artà
• Sanctuary of Sant Salvador, in Felanitx
• Puig de Randa, in Algaida
• Puig de Bonany, in Petra

The objective is to avoid concentrations of vehicles in spaces with little circulation or evacuation capacity.

Mallorca's major roads are not included in the general closures

The main communication routes of the island are not included, in principle, in the general road closures announced, to guarantee general connectivity and the passage of emergency services.

In principle, there will be no general road closures on:

• Ma-13, the Inca motorway
• Ma-15, the Manacor road
• Ma-30, the ring road of Palma
• Ma-1, the highway of the West
• Ma-19, the Llucmajor motorway, except for the exits affected by the restrictions of the Platja de Palma

This does not mean that these roads will be free of traffic jams. The device may modify restrictions based on traffic conditions or apply specific measures for security reasons.

Who will be able to access the restricted areas?

The restrictions will affect motor vehicles, but there will be exceptions for certain groups and justified displacements.

Residents

Residents will have to prove that they live in the affected area by means of their ID card or resident certificate.

Owners of second homes

They will have to present documentation that proves ownership or use of the dwelling, such as the IBI, the deed, or recent electricity or water bills.

Workers

Workers in restricted areas will have to be able to justify their movement with their employment contract, a recent payslip, or a company certificate.

Hotel and restaurant clients

Customers of hotels or restaurants located within restricted areas will be able to access them if they have the booking documentation. Vehicles that only perform escort or pick-up tasks will not be able to remain parked during the stay.

Public transport and essential services

The passage will be guaranteed for taxis, VTC vehicles, TIB network buses, emergency vehicles and essential public services, in accordance with the conditions established by the device.

The goods providers will be prohibited from accessing the restricted roads during closing hours.

On the other hand, vehicles that are already within the affected areas will be able to leave without the same access restrictions.

And bicycles?

The restrictions announced by the Government refer to motor vehicles. Therefore, bicycles are not affected by the general prohibition of motor vehicle circulation, without prejudice to specific checks or restrictions that each town council may establish at certain points.

On Palma Beach, access on foot, by bicycle or by public transport does not require the credential required for private vehicles.

What will happen when an observation area is full?

The 26 Official Observation Zones (ZOO) have been selected by the Government taking into account, among other factors, the reception capacity, the availability of parking and the possibility of intervention by emergency services. They are not necessarily the points from which the eclipse is best viewed, but the spaces where the Administration can best guarantee safety.

When a ZOO reaches its maximum capacity, access will be closed. Therefore, arriving at the zone does not guarantee being able to enter.Restrictions can be brought forward

One of the important elements of the device is that the planned schedules are not immutable.

If a road or observation point reaches its capacity limit early, the authorities will be able to advance the restrictions to prevent saturation from hindering the entry or exit of emergency services.

For this reason, administrations recommend avoiding unnecessary travel and checking traffic status before leaving. Calvià also especially recommends not traveling by car to coastal areas and viewpoints if not necessary.

The Consell de Mallorca will provide updated information on road and parking conditions during the eclipse day.
