Fire controlled at Mercapalma

The fire has caused a spectacular column of smoke visible from various points of Palma and has mobilized numerous emergency services

PalmaThe fire that affected the Mercapalma complex, where it caused significant material damage, is already under control. Before that, it raised a large column of smoke that generated considerable agitation, although there were no injuries or affectations to the airport.

The emergency services of the Majorcan capital received a notice at approximately 3:30 PM for a fire in Mercapalma and the fire was declared under control around 6 PM, at which point the Mallorca Firefighters, who collaborated in the operation, departed. At the site, emergency personnel remain to continue with the extinction tasks.

In addition to the Palma Firefighters, personnel from the Calvià, Inca, Llucmajor fire stations and the La Milana helicopter, as well as the National Police and Local Police, have been dispatched to the scene. Aena and Ibanat resources have also joined.

The situation has forced the old Llucmajor road to Son Banya to be closed to traffic, where residents have been advised to preemptively evacuate the area until the extinction tasks are completed, Europa Press explained.

The City Council has indicated that the incident, which occurred in the complex's warehouses, would have originated in one of the trucks parked there.

Aena sources have reported that the airport has activated the Self-Protection Plan and has also collaborated in extinguishing the fire with several units from the fire extinguishing service. Despite the proximity of the fire to the exterior of the facility, operations have not been affected by the fire and smoke.

Sources close to the case have detailed to Efe that Son Banya had been confined, although the Councilor for Citizen Security, Llorenç Bauzá, has assured that a preventive evacuation has been recommended to the inhabitants and action has been taken in the village, as the flames had spread to its entrance.

For its part, SAMU 061 has detailed that, although they have traveled to the area with multiple vehicles to attend to possible injured persons, they have only had to act with one person who suffered an anxiety attack.
