PalmAn unexpected and intense storm hit Mallorca this Thursday morning. Aemet (Metropolitan Emergency Services) and Emergencies, in response to the situation, activated a yellow alert for the archipelago at around 7:25 a.m., although all alerts under the Meteobal plan have now been deactivated.

During the storm, the most notable incidents recorded in Palma were a lightning strike against a palm tree in the La Vileta neighborhood. Fortunately, although the tree caught fire, the rain itself extinguished the fire. Palma Airport also recorded incidents, in this case caused by leaks and flooding resulting from the rainfall. In a video below, you can see how on the second floor of Son Sant Joan, near the escalators, some areas are sealed off due to puddles of water formed by leaks, and how a stream falls from the ceiling onto some stairs.

In a message on the social network X, Enaire has reported that heavy clouds and a storm are causing safety delays on some flights to both Mallorca and Menorca. Specifically, in Son Sant Joan, a flight from Paris had to be diverted, and one flight from Menorca and another to Ibiza have been cancelled.

Aemet has detailed that the locally strong showers and storms have formed on the Peninsula and have been moving from the northeast, crossing Mallorca and Menorca during the early hours of the day. In fact, the showers that have affected the two islands originated in Segovia.

The chances of rain in Mallorca are between 40% and 70%, according to Aemet (Spanish Meteorological Agency). Rainfall began around 6 a.m. in both Mallorca and Menorca, yielding between 20 and 25 liters per square meter in less than half an hour. The Alfàbia mountain range recorded the most liters per square meter in one hour, with 26. According to the forecast, the rain and storms will particularly affect, in the case of Mallorca, the Tramuntana mountain range, the north and northeast, inland, and the south. The storms may be accompanied by strong gusts of wind. Minimum temperatures in the archipelago range from 15 degrees (in the Serra) to 24 degrees (in the southwest and south of Mallorca and in western Menorca).

Swimming banned on three Palma beaches after rain

The beaches of Cala Mayor, Can Pere Antoni, and Playa de Palma are closed to swimming pending analysis of the large volume of water that, due to Thursday's heavy rains, has flowed into the sea through the capital's torrents.

City Council sources have explained that this is standard protocol in the event of heavy rainfall and that the results will be announced this Friday, insisting that no case indicates a toxic or harmful spill. Ciutat Jardí, meanwhile, has a yellow flag.
