The councilor from Capdepera denies assaulting local police officers on New Year's Eve.
Joan Campins maintains that he only tried to control a fight and reserves the right to take legal action for defamation and disclosure of secrets
PalmThe Councilor for Fairs and Festivals of the Capdepera Town Hall, Joan Campins Melis (MÁS), has categorically denied physically or verbally assaulting any member of the Local Police on New Year's Eve, after some media outlets reported that two officers may have filed a complaint regarding a possible altercation with him. In a statement published on his social media profile, Campins maintains that his intervention was to try to control the situation after a fight broke out in Plaça del Sitjar, and that he alerted the officers to take action. According to his account, the police were positioned in an area with limited visibility and far from the most problematic locations, such as the restrooms and the bar, and their intervention occurred after the fight had already ended.
The councilman admits there were "tense moments," but insists he never obstructed police action nor made physical contact with the officers. He also emphasizes that participating in the festivities is part of his responsibility as a public official and not a derogatory act against the force. Campins reserves the right to file complaints for defamation and possible breach of confidentiality, should the information leaked to the press about the events not reflect reality. The councilman attributes the leak to "internal problems within the Capdepera Local Police."
