PalmThe Balearic Government has initiated excavation, exhumation, and identification of human remains in two mass graves located in the Son Servera cemetery (Mallorca), one situated in a flowerbed and another in the niche area, within the framework of the V Plan de Fosas of the Balearic Islands 2025-2026. The objective of the intervention is to locate the mass graves, recover the remains of the buried individuals, and advance their identification.

These actions correspond to the first intervention in Mallorca of the V Plan de Fosas, following the interventions initiated in Eivissa and Formentera – both in the old cemetery and in the new cemetery of Sant Francesc and in Els Pujols –, and are part of the progressive deployment of this program on all islands. The work includes excavation and exhumation of remains, as well as subsequent study through anthropological and genetic analyses.

Two interventions

The intervention includes two differentiated areas of the cemetery: on the one hand, a pit located in a flowerbed and, on the other, a possible pit located in the niche area. Both actions are part of the interventions planned within the V Pit Plan and have been defined based on previous studies and collected testimonies.

The works include excavation and exhumation of remains.

The tasks include the opening of the designated spaces, the archaeological documentation of the findings, the individualized recovery of the remains, and their subsequent transfer for laboratory study, following established protocols.

The actions are carried out by teams specialized in forensic archaeology and anthropology, with the participation of the Aranzadi Society of Sciences and ATICS, SL.

With these new excavations in Son Servera, the Government of the Balearic Islands reaffirms its commitment to advancing the identification of victims, returning them to their families, and giving them a dignified burial.
