PalmThe GOB (Basque Government) and the Son Sardina residents' association have expressed their firm rejection of the importation of waste from Ibiza to Mallorca, on the same day that this measure is expected to be approved in Parliament through the decree of measures to accelerate strategic projects.

The entities denounce that this decision means allocating 50 million euros of public money to waste transport instead of investing in structural and definitive solutions for management in Ibiza and Formentera, which still do not have a Sectoral Waste Master Plan and have selective collection figures much lower than those of the rest of the islands.

According to the entities' calculations, the operation would involve the arrival of 15,000 additional trucks per year—about 40 per day—traveling along the ring road and the Sóller road to the Son Reus incinerator, the GOB stated in a statement. They denounce that it also represents an increase in environmental, logistical, and economic impacts, as well as a reduction in the useful life of the cemented ash landfill, which is currently estimated to last until 2034.

In this sense, they have warned that the decree contravenes the hierarchy of waste policy established by the European Union. They reject the import because it represents an unsustainable and polluting solution, as incineration generates atmospheric emissions, toxic ash, and contributes to climate change; and because it perpetuates a centralized and failed waste management model through the concessionaire Tirme, instead of promoting island and local responsibility.

They also denounce that it contradicts institutional discourses on sustainability and the circular economy, conveying to citizens the false idea that waste "disappears" when it is moved to another island. For all these reasons, they are demanding that the Prohens Government withdraw this decree and, "instead of financing unsustainable transport, provide technical and strategic support to Ibiza and Formentera to improve their waste management and move towards a more responsible model aligned with European criteria."
