PalmaThe Government has tried this Monday to lower the tension surrounding El Trenc after last week's massive human chain. The Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Natural Environment, Joan Simonet, has met with the GOB and assured the environmental organization that "not a single square meter" of the Trenc-Salobrar de Campos Natural Park will be unprotected.

The statements come eight days after the mobilization that gathered nearly 10,000 people in defense of Trenc. Despite the commitment expressed by the minister, the president of GOB, Joan Moranta, has conveyed to the Government the entity's concern about what he considers a tendency to "liberalize and reduce environmental regulations." Moranta has warned that, if the Executive continues down this path, "it will find us in opposition."

The minister reiterated during the meeting the Government's "firm commitment" to the conservation of Trenc and defended that the management of protected areas will continue to be carried out with technical criteria, dialogue, and respect for the current protection framework.

Despite this message, the main point of disagreement remains the Master Plan for the Use and Management of Natural Resources (PORN) approved in 2023. Environmental organizations maintain that the modification introduced by the Omnibus Law could facilitate changes in the protection area expanded three years ago, especially around Les Covetes, even though the Government insists it will not reduce the surface area of the natural park.

During the meeting, the status of the management plans for protected natural areas was also reviewed. According to the Government, 19 out of the 20 pending or obsolete planning instruments are already being processed. Among the management plans are the new Master Plan for the Use and Management of Trenc-Salobrar de Campos, as well as those corresponding to Cabrera, the Serra de Tramuntana, Dragonera, Mondragó, the Llevant Peninsula, and the Salinas d'Eivissa i Formentera.
