The Mallorca Tenants' Union is born to combat speculation and the housing crisis
The organization will present itself on May 9 and wants to turn the unease over rent into a tool for legal and political pressure
PalmThe Mallorca Tenants' Union is born with the will to “canalyze social discontent into a tool for legal and political struggle”. As the organization has reported in a statement, the objective is to articulate a collective and organized response to the escalating rental prices and precariousness affecting thousands of people on the island.
The initiative's steering group was formed following the presentation of the book Tenant Power in various locations across Mallorca. From these meetings, the initiators identified the need to structure the existing discontent and equip it with tools for action, both in the legal and political spheres.
The union maintains that the “extreme difficulty of access to housing” responds to structural causes, among which it points to rentism, real estate speculation, and gentrification through tourism. These are precisely some of the dynamics that the organization aims to combat.
The official presentation will take place on May 9, at 12:00 PM, at Cinema Ciutat. Representatives from the Catalonia Tenants' Union, the Confederation of Tenants' Unions, and housing policy expert Jaime Palomera will participate in the event.
The Mallorca Tenants' Union has also called on social movements and collectives already active on the island to “jointly face” the housing access crisis and strengthen existing alliances.
During the presentation, the organization's main lines of work will be announced, emphasis will be placed on the importance of membership, and the first mobilizations planned for the summer months will be announced.
