The OCB demands from Prohens the "urgent" call of the Social Council of the Catalan Language

The organization criticizes the fact that the Government has kept the Plan of Urgent Actions on Language Policy in a drawer since March.

PalmThe Balearic Cultural Work (OCB) has called on the president of the Catalan government, Marga Prohens, to convene an urgent meeting of the Social Council of the Catalan Language to discuss the Plan of Urgent Actions on Language Policy, which "has been lying dormant since March," according to the organization. Furthermore, the OCB lamented that the Council has not met for 15 months, despite the fact that the current situation regarding the language "does not allow for further delays."

The president of the OCB and vice president of the Catalan Language Council, Antoni Llabrés, has called for an immediate convening of the body's plenary session, following a meeting of the Standing Committee to discuss the Plan prepared by the Council's Linguistic Planning Committee—which was commissioned on July 1, 2024—and the "priority" document 2 that should be implemented "immediately" given the state of Catalan in the Balearic Islands. The initiatives cover education, healthcare, social services, and youth, among other areas.

The OCB has emphasized that the current sociolinguistic situation requires "urgent and effective" measures for linguistic reception and integration. In this regard, Llabrés considered it "peremptory" that "the public authorities react and assume their responsibility in the promotion and protection of the language of the Balearic Islands."
