The port of Palma exceeds the cruise ship limit with four vessels and nearly 15,000 passengers.
The regulations establish a maximum of three cruise ships and a total of 8,000 passengers per day.
PalmThe Port of Palma doubled this Saturday the cruise passenger limit established in the agreement, which limits the number of cruise ships that can arrive at the port of Palma on the same day to three, and the total number of passengers to 8,000. However, Palma currently accommodates four vessels docked, with a combined capacity of over 14,000 passengers.
The largest of all is the MSC Virtuosa, with capacity for up to 6,334 passengers, followed by AidaCosma, with 5,200. Between the two, they have the capacity of a mega-cruise ship, which establishes the agreement limiting this type of vessel in Palma, as they exceed 5,000 cruise passengers.
In addition, the profile of X, Fum al Port also notes that the Marella Voyager, with capacity for 1,912 passengers, and the Seabourn Ovation, with 600 cruise passengers, have also docked in the port of Palma.
It should be remembered that the agreement signed between the Government and the employers' association CLIA in 2022 establishes that only three cruise ships per day and a maximum of 8,000 tourists can dock in the port of Palma. Furthermore, the regulations also establish that of the three vessels, only one could be a mega-cruise ship with a capacity of more than 5,000 passengers, according to the limitation in force until 2027.
The PSOE accuses the Prohens Government of "letting die" the limitation on cruises
The Secretary of Tourism of the PSIB-PSOE, Joana Maria Adrover, has denounced that, for the first time since 2022, the agreement reached in the Balearic Islands to limit the influx of large cruise ships in the port of Palma has been breached and has accused the Government of Marga Prohens of "letting the historic agreement die" for "leaving"
Adrover reproached the PP-Vox pact for breaking the balance achieved in the previous legislature, which committed shipping companies to restrict the number of stairs, the PSOE reported in a statement, after learning that the port of Palma has this Saturday four cruise ships with capacity for more than 14,000' and only one more of 5,000.
The Secretary of Tourism for the PSIB-PSOE (Spanish Socialist Workers' Party) recalled that the agreement brokered by the government of the previous term's pact "was an international example of sustainability and common sense," as it limited the arrival of large ships to Palma, protecting "both residents and the environment, as well as coexistence with tourism."
