The spokesperson for the PSIB (Socialist Party of the Balearic Islands) in the Consell de Mallorca (Island Council of Mallorca), Catalina Cladera, denounced this Monday that the institution's budget, which is scheduled to be approved this Tuesday, "is short at least 45 million euros," and therefore she believes the accounts present "a risk of non-compliance and blocked budget items." Along the same lines, the Socialist spokesperson opined that the Consell de Mallorca's budget "is tinged with xenophobia," that it "attacks the local language," and that it "does not solve the problems of the people of Mallorca."

Housing and Tourism

Cladera believes the real problems facing Mallorcans are housing and overtourism, and therefore the PSIB will present two motions focused on these issues at the first ordinary plenary session of the year, which is expected to take place on January 8. "There is no right to housing for residents without putting limits on illegal tourist rentals. There can be no sustainable tourism if there are no residents who can live with dignity in Mallorca," Cladera emphasized. In this regard, the spokesperson accused the PP and Vox parties of "fostering the exclusion of people and turning a blind eye while rental prices rise by 15% annually, neighborhoods empty out, and residents lose the right to live where they were born." She also criticized the Consell's "lack of action" in the fight against illegal vacation rentals, citing "cases that expire, sanctions that are not enforced, and no precautionary closures of illegal activities." Among other issues, these initiatives will demand "a firmer stance in the fight against illegal tourist rentals to return homes to the residential market, increase the stock of public and social housing, and mobilize vacant homes with public guarantees," explained Socialist councilor Sofía Alonso. Meanwhile, the deputy spokesperson for the PP in the island institution, Bernat Vallori, accused the PSIB of trying to "divert attention" from the "historic" budget of the Consell de Mallorca, which, according to Vallori's predictions, "will be approved on time and in the proper manner." The Popular Party representative lamented the Socialists' criticism of budget funding, which they claim will be negatively impacted by the lack of regional budgets for 2026, arguing that this funding has been "guaranteed by law" since 2014. Conversely, he emphasized that "six out of every ten euros" of the budget expected to be received this Tuesday represent a "record" amount of direct investment for municipalities.

Marcial Rodríguez

The spokesperson for the Socialist group in the Council of Mallorca, Catalina Cladera, has urged the island's president, Llorenç Galmés, to dismiss his Tourism Councillor, José Marcial Rodríguez, for failing to fulfill his assigned duties. "It should have been done already," she said. She made these remarks on Monday when asked about information published by the Daily of Mallorca Regarding a possible cabinet reshuffle by Galmés that would entail the departure of Marcial Rodríguez, Cladera asserted that her position is not due to "a personal matter" but rather to the observation that, in her opinion, Rodríguez is not fulfilling the tourism responsibilities entrusted to the Consell de Mallorca. "Much can be done to curb tourism, which he is not doing, quite the opposite, and to control illegal vacation rentals, which Palma is full of and nothing is being done about," she emphasized. For his part, Vallori stated that the PP (People's Party) in the island institution "knows nothing" about the matter. "The Popular Party group has no information from this term of the Executive and we have nothing to add," he simply said.
