PalmaThe Canamunt Self-Managed Festivals return this July in the full aftermath of the controversy between Cort and Orgull Llonguet. Without public subsidies and funded exclusively by the neighbors, they claim the community model with a program that combines culture, coexistence, and defense of the neighborhood. The program will extend until July 22 with popular dinners, open-air cinema, children's activities, music, and the traditional Canamuntiades, with the aim of recovering public space and strengthening the neighborhood's identity in the face of real estate pressure and gentrification.

The kickoff will be this Thursday, July 2, with the traditional neighborhood dinner in Plaça de Quadrado, where dancer and choreographer Mariantònia Oliver will give the opening speech. Afterwards, attendees will share tables in an open evening where neighbors can bring whatever they want to share.

The festival will continue on Friday, July 3, with the parade by Xaranga Final Feliz, which will tour the neighborhood from Plaça de Quadrado to Plaça de Llorenç Bisbal. The day will culminate with a popular party enlivened by Las Garbo (PinchadiscAs) and DJ Wateq.

One of the most anticipated events will again be the open-air cinema organized by Bar Rita, which will turn Plaça de Llorenç Bisbal into an outdoor screening room. On Tuesday, July 7, "As Bestas" by Rodrigo Sorogoyen can be seen, while on Thursday, July 16, it will be the turn of "La cena", starring Mario Casas and Alberto San Juan. Before each screening, starting at 7:30 PM, there will be live music to set the mood in the square until the start of the shows, scheduled for 9:30 PM.

Calatrava and Gerreria Factories

The July 7th event will also include a guided tour to discover the history of trades and factories in La Calatrava and La Gerreria, organized jointly with the Cort Library, as well as children's activities with Petit Canamunt and the water festival Canamunt en remull.

Another of the established proposals are the Sopars a la lesca by the Brunzit collective, which this year will take place on July 8th in Plaça de Llorenç Villalonga and on July 22nd in Plaça de Cort. Both events, scheduled from 7 p.m. onwards, invite citizens to turn the squares into large community tables.

The Canamuntiades will also once again occupy a prominent place in the program. They will be held on July 10th in Plaça de Quadrado under the motto 'Balearic Balance: Living Here Without Falling Off the Map', with satirical tests that ironize about issues such as tourism, housing, and the social reality of the Islands.

The program will be completed with the Canamunt Parade, promoted by TEIPA; a solidarity day to prepare a fideuada for the benefit of Zaqueo; the screening of the documentary Memòries d'un barri, by Vicenç Mates i Miralles, and a live music concert at Bar Sa Travessa.

The Canamunt Neighbors Association reminds us that the festivals are organized without any public subsidy and are possible thanks to the voluntary contributions of the neighbors, collaborating businesses, and participants. With this commitment, the self-managed festivals of Canamunt advocate for community organization as a tool to preserve the character of the neighborhood and defend public space in the face of the transformation of Palma's historic center.
