PalmaThe Hay Soluciones para el Vertedero de Ibiza platform visited the Coma treatment plant this Monday to demand an end to the transfer of sludge to the Ca na Putxa environmental area. They consider that this practice is aggravating the collapse of the island's landfill and increasing the nuisance to residents of the area, in the municipality of Santa Eulària.

The visit was attended by the Minister of Environmental Management, Ignacio José Andrés Roselló, as well as representatives of the Balearic Water Agency (Abaqua) and the neighborhood platform itself. During the meeting, the residents expressed what they describe as "senseless" to continue saturating Ca na Putxa with sludge from La Coma.

According to the data presented during the visit, an average of 300 tons of sludge are transferred monthly to the landfill managed by UTE Giref, with an approximate annual cost of 1.1 million euros which is passed on to the sanitation fee paid by citizens.

The residents also point out that La Coma receives 50% of the sludge generated in Ibiza and 100% of that from Formentera, which after being treated at the treatment plant are transported by trucks to Ca na Putxa. They warn that this constant flow contributes to saturating the seventh cell, the only one that still has capacity in the island's deposit.

In this context, the platform demands that the sludge receive adequate treatment that allows it to be used for purposes such as agriculture and requests that this issue be included within the Shock Plan for Waste that the Consell d'Eivissa is preparing. They also warn that the future of the island's waste management system is uncertain once the landfill's capacity is exhausted.
