Convene a dinner-protest in Plaça de Cort after the City Council disallowed the neighborhood event

PalmaThe Brunzit collective, the L'Elèctrica and La Fonera Ateneus, and the Canamunt neighborhood association have called for a protest gathering this Wednesday at 8 p.m. in Plaça de Cort to protest against Palma City Council's decision not to authorize the 'Sopar a la Llesca' (Dinner on the Slice) planned for this space as part of the Canamunt 2026 Festival program. The call comes after the controversy generated by the denial of the permit and the criticism from the organizing entities regarding municipal management.

Through social media, Brunzit assures that the mobilization aims to denounce the obstacles that, in their opinion, the City Council places on popular initiatives to "enjoy touristified public spaces." For this reason, the collective has invited citizens to come to the square with their 'pa amb oli' (bread with oil), a lunchbox, or a basket to have a "non-dinner" in Plaça de Cort, in a call loaded with irony.

"This Wednesday there will be no chairs or tables, thanks to the City Council," they point out in the call. They also emphasize that, while the residents cannot celebrate the dinner, "nearby there will be tourists who will have terraces and chairs at their disposal." "It seems like a good place to have dinner, as long as you pay a fortune. Come and defend your right to dine in the square, whatever it may be, because the squares belong to the residents, not the tourists," they add.

During this month of July, Brunzit has organized various itinerant dinners in different squares in the center of Palma, and the one planned for this Wednesday, as part of the Canamunt festivities, has not received municipal authorization and was communicated two days before the event with a phone call to the organizers.

For its part, the Palma City Council maintains that it has not disqualified the activity at any time, but rather that it has not authorized the occupation of Plaça de Cort. The municipal spokesperson, Mercedes Celeste, justified the decision by the fact that this space has already hosted 89 activities during 2026, one more than in all of 2025.

According to Celeste, the City Council offered the organizers different alternative locations for the dinner to take place. The spokesperson explained that these proposals were rejected by the entities and assured that the City Council continues to keep Plaça del Quadrado available as an alternative, in addition to the 60 tables and 400 chairs initially planned for the activity.

The entities promoting the Sopar a la Llesca, including Brunzit, the Canamunt Residents' Association, La Fonera, and L'Elèctrica, have denounced that the decision was communicated to them verbally only two days before the planned celebration and without a reasoned administrative resolution. They also consider that this case highlights the difficulties that, they claim, community initiatives face in developing activities in Palma's public space.
