PalmaA new digital platform allows the discovery of 50 emblematic spaces in Mallorca through videos, photographs, augmented reality, Street View, and virtual reconstructions. The project, Mallorca Digitalitzada i Realitat Augmentada, presented this Monday at Es Baluard, consists of an interactive website and an experimental application that collect a selection of heritage spaces and elements from the island chosen for their historical, cultural, landscape, and ethnological relevance.

The initiative has been promoted by the Consell de Mallorca, developed by the University of the Balearic Islands (UIB), and managed by the University-Business Foundation of the Balearic Islands (FUEIB). It has received an investment of 600,000 euros from European Union funds within the framework of the Tourism Sustainability Plan in Destinations (PSTD).

Among the fifty selected resources are natural spaces such as Cabrera and La Dragonera, monuments such as Bellver Castle, La Seu Cathedral, and Alaró Castle, emblematic buildings such as La Llotja and Almudaina Palace, as well as elements of intangible heritage, such as the cant de la Sibil·la or the Firó de Sóller.

According to the president of the Consell, Llorenç Galmés, the platform aims to show that "Mallorca is much more than a tourist destination" and to offer a new way of getting to know everything that defines Mallorca "as an island". He also argued that new technologies make heritage "more alive and accessible".

Interactive itineraries

The director of the project and of the LADAT unit for Animation and Audiovisual Technologies at the UIB, Juan Antonio Montes de Oca, explained that the platform incorporates photographs, audiovisuals, 360-degree videos, three-dimensional reconstructions, interactive itineraries, illustrations, and explanatory texts. All this material aims to offer an immersive experience and facilitate access to spaces that, in some cases, are difficult to visit.

In this regard, he highlighted the case of Cabrera, for which a virtual itinerary has been created for the first time, allowing visitors to explore practically all the places in the archipelago. "New technologies must serve to add and open the doors to everything our island can offer," he stated.

Montes de Oca also emphasized that the platform is created with the intention of growing. The current 50 resources are just a first selection, and the project is designed to incorporate new spaces and content, with the aim of becoming a reference digital repository for Mallorcan heritage.
