Unemployment fell by 7.6% in the Balearic Islands compared to last year, and membership rose by 2.2%.

However, during the month of August, an increase of 2.3% was recorded.

PalmUnemployment registered with public employment service offices rose by 582 in August in the Balearic Islands compared to the previous month (+2.3%), reaching 25,968 unemployed, although year-on-year unemployment in the islands fell by 7.6% (2,144 fewer unemployed), according to published data.

This total number of unemployed is the lowest figure for an August since 2002. Since the beginning of the comparable historical series in 1996, unemployment has risen in August most years in the Balearic Islands (up to 24 times), while it has fallen on only five occasions. The increase last month was the smallest increase since 2015. In the last year, unemployment has accumulated a decrease of 2,144 unemployed, which represents a decrease of 7.6%.

By sector, unemployment registered the most significant increases in services, 566 more (+3.11%); construction, 116 more (+3.42%); and industry, 15 more (+1.28%). At the end of the month, the sectors with the most unemployed were services (18,790) and construction (3,506), while the sectors with the fewest unemployed were agriculture (306) and industry (1,190).

By sex, of the 25,968 unemployed registered in August, 14,784 were women, 632 more (+4.5%) and 11,184 men, which represents an increase of 614 in the number of unemployed compared to the previous month (+5.8%). In August, unemployment among young people under 25 increased, with 27 more unemployed than at the end of the previous month (+1.1%), while unemployment among people aged 25 and over increased by 1,219 unemployed (+5.47%).

Catalonia (+7,942), Madrid (+4,214) and the Basque Country (+4,178) were the regions where the number of unemployed grew the most, while Castilla-La Mancha, the Canary Islands and Navarra, where it grew the least, with decreases of 1,047, 873 and 15.

Regarding Social Security affiliation, it has decreased by 3,619 people compared to July, 0.5%, according to data from the Ministry of Inclusion, Social Security and Migration.

In August, 26,201 contracts were registered in the Balearic Islands, 12.7% fewer than in the same month last year. Of these, 16,186 were permanent contracts, 6.9% lower than in August last year, and 10,015 were temporary contracts (20.8% fewer).

Of the number of contracts registered in August, 38.22% were temporary (compared to 31.33% the previous month) and 61.78% were permanent (68.67% the previous month).
