Education Ministry convenes the Roundtable for Subsidized Education and (for now) deactivates the union protest

USO, STEI, FSIE, UGT and CCOO criticize the call made this Monday at the last minute and describe it as "institutional bad faith"

PalmThe Balearic Islands Ministry of Education and Universities has convened the Roundtable for Subsidized Private Education for Thursday, March 5th at 12:30 pm at the Ministry's headquarters. This has led to the cancellation of the planned demonstration by unions and delegates scheduled for today, February 24th, outside the Ministry. The agenda includes a review of the Framework Agreement and the incorporation of new working conditions starting in the 2026/2027 academic year. According to the Ministry, this meeting reflects the Government's commitment to continue improving the working conditions of teaching staff in subsidized private education. This sector has already seen measures implemented during this legislative term, such as an increase in seniority bonuses (sexenios) with an impact of 3 million euros, and salary increases of 2.2% and 2.2% in 2021, with an estimated impact of 15 million euros over two years. Other measures have also been implemented, such as reducing teaching loads, gradually decreasing student-teacher ratios in preschool, and increasing resources for addressing diversity.

Last-minute announcement

However, the unions USO, STEI, FSIE, UGT, and CCOO have strongly criticized the way the meeting was called, which came late yesterday afternoon. They consider it "a clear example of bad faith and a lack of institutional respect" and demand a stable and scheduled negotiation process with real substance, allowing for the fulfillment of pending agreements and the negotiation of a new Framework Agreement that guarantees improved working conditions and genuine parity with the public sector. "Teachers in state-subsidized private schools deserve respect, dignity, and real commitments," the unions state, adding that the negotiating table has now been convened and that the willingness to negotiate seriously and put an end to months of deadlock and institutional contempt must be demonstrated with concrete actions.
