PalmaMÉS per Mallorca has called on the Government for a shock plan to adapt the educational centers of the Balearic Islands to heat episodes, which are increasingly common during the school months. The party has registered a proposal in Parliament to promote actions that improve thermal comfort in schools and institutes.

The initiative proposes immediate measures such as the installation of fans and efficient ventilation systems, the creation of spaces that can function as climate shelters, the increase of water points and fountains, more shaded areas in courtyards, and specific protocols for days of extreme temperature.

The group also proposes structural actions in buildings, such as improving thermal insulation, installing photovoltaic panels, green or reflective roofs, and renaturalizing school spaces.

According to MÉS, high temperatures can affect the health and academic performance of students. The party recalls that different studies indicate that temperatures above 26 or 27 degrees can reduce concentration, memory, and reading comprehension, in addition to increasing the risk of fatigue, dehydration, and physical discomfort.

The proposal also calls for a stable line of funding so that these measures do not fall economically on the town councils. In addition, it asks to prioritize the most vulnerable centers and simplify procedures to be able to execute the actions with more agility.

The deputy Maria Ramon, promoter of the initiative, has defended that the climate adaptation of educational centers is a matter of public health and educational quality. As she has pointed out, schools must adapt to the new climatic reality to guarantee adequate conditions for students and teachers.
