The Government presents objections against the new European fishing regulation
The government supports the sector and is demanding exceptions for the Mediterranean coastal fleet in light of the new DEA requirements.
PalmThe Government has submitted objections to the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food against the new European fisheries control regulation. This aligns it with the sector's rejection of the Electronic Logbook (DEA) requirements. The Executive believes these measures are not adapted to the reality of the Balearic Islands' coastal fleet, which operates daily, short fishing trips and sells fresh fish the same day. Therefore, it argues that the current system already guarantees the control and traceability of catches and considers the requirement to notify authorities four hours in advance of arrival in port disproportionate. The objections request exceptions for the Mediterranean coastal fleet and warn that the Mediterranean's high biodiversity hinders the accurate reporting of catches, in addition to increasing fuel consumption and creating potential risks to maritime safety. The Director General of Fisheries, Antoni Grau, has reiterated the Government's support for the fishing sector and called for regulations adapted to the economic and social reality of the Balearic Islands, as well as proportionate regulations for recreational fishing.
