The Government is already clear where the second electrical cable with the Peninsula will pass

PalmThe Government defends the project for the second electrical link between the Islands and the Peninsula as an "essential" infrastructure to guarantee supply and advance the energy transition. The Executive especially endorses the route planned through La Herradura, in Alcudia, which it considers the most viable option from both a technical and environmental point of view.

The Director General of Energy, Diego Viu, participated this Tuesday in an information session open to citizens convened by the Alcudia City Council, which was also attended by Energy and Environment officials. The meeting served to present the project details and respond to residents' concerns.

According to the Government, technical and environmental studies conclude that the cable's entry through La Herradura has the least impact on the marine environment. Specifically, they assure that the impact on Posidonia would be up to eleven times lower compared to other alternatives analyzed.

Regarding the terrestrial route, the proposal has been modified to reduce the impact on the population. The Executive states that it has managed to decrease the cable's passage through areas close to homes by more than 60% and that additional measures have been incorporated to minimize disturbances.

The project has been developed at a joint meeting with different institutions – such as the Alcudia City Council and the Consell de Mallorca –, neighborhood representatives, the Ministry for Ecological Transition, and Red Eléctrica, the infrastructure promoter.

The Government has also ruled out other options, such as installing the cable without burying it on the seabed, because it considers them not technically viable and that they could put the security of supply at risk.

In this regard, it recalls recent episodes of power outages in the Islands, such as those in Menorca in 2016 and in Formentera, to defend the need to strengthen the grid. The Executive insists that the project must comply with environmental regulations and that improvements can still be made within technical limits.

DebateThe project for the second electrical cable between Mallorca and the Peninsula has generated debate in recent months. The citizen platform ANACA has called for more institutional dialogue and has defended reopening the discussion on the route, pointing out that a report commissioned by the Alcúdia City Council indicated less environmental impact in an entry through the Bay of Alcúdia. For its part, the GOB has questioned the need for the infrastructure and has warned of possible environmental and climatic impacts, in addition to calling for alternatives based on reducing energy consumption and efficiency.
