The Government provides water in tanker trucks to municipalities, but does not guarantee any volume
The municipalities of Mallorca without a connection to the Abaqua network will be able to load at Son Pacs if they request it 48 hours in advance
PalmaThe Government has approved a new model agreement for supplying drinking water by tanker trucks to the municipalities of Mallorca that are not connected to the main supply network. Although the Ministry of the Sea and the Water Cycle presents the measure as a way to guarantee supply, the document does not establish minimum consumption commitments nor does it assure the town councils a specific volume of water.
The agreement, approved through the Balearic Water and Environmental Quality Agency (Abaqua), will allow municipalities to load drinking water at the Son Pacs facilities to meet specific needs. The town councils will have to notify at least 48 hours in advance the quantity they need and the authorized trucks to carry out the loading.
Abaqua will assume water quality controls until the moment it is loaded onto vehicles, in accordance with current health regulations. According to the Ministry, the approach aims to strengthen the municipalities' response capacity in the face of specific episodes of water shortages and to take advantage of existing hydraulic infrastructures.
The model is specifically intended for municipalities that cannot receive water directly from Abaqua's main network. In this way, it complements the agreement that is already applied to municipalities connected to this infrastructure.
The new model will also be incorporated into the agreements of municipalities that already use the tanker truck service, such as Deià, Puigpunyent, Banyalbufar, and Bunyola, as their respective agreements are renewed or extended. The Ministry points out that municipalities in the Pla de Mallorca that need to temporarily reinforce their supply sources during periods of high demand can also benefit from it.
First agreement with Esporles
Abaqua has also approved the first agreement of these characteristics with the Esporles City Council. The Consistory had requested to reinforce the supply to the nuclei of Les Rotgetes and Jardín de Flores due to what the Ministry qualifies as an "exceptional situation", without providing further details in the statement.
The agreement will allow Esporles to punctually and temporarily load drinking water in Son Pacs during the months of July, August, September, and October. The objective is to reinforce the supply to the two nuclei during this period.
