Water consumption out of control in Pla de Mallorca: wells drop 13 meters in one month
The Commonwealth launches the 'Without water there is no Plan' campaign after detecting peaks of nocturnal consumption that strain the aquifers and exceed the capacity of the wells
PalmThe situation of water resources in Pla de Mallorca has become particularly delicate after the Mancomunitat detected in recent weeks "episodes of extraordinary consumption" that have exceeded the usual production capacity of the region's wells and have caused increasing pressure on underground aquifers.
According to technical data collected by municipal services, consumption outside the norm has intensified, especially during the night. In these periods, when human activity should be minimal, the pumps continue to operate at a high rate and peaks of up to 103 cubic meters per hour have been recorded at 02:17 AM, a figure described as "extraordinary" by the Administration. This sustained behavior of the system prevents the wells from resting and hinders the natural recovery of the aquifer.
The consequence of this dynamic is already visible. In just one month, the water level in some wells has dropped by up to 13 meters, from 180 to 193 meters deep. The reports also confirm a reduction in production capacity and a generalized decrease in water levels, a fact that reinforces concern for the sustainability of the system.
Faced with this scenario, the Mancomunitat has launched the awareness campaign 'Without water there is no Plan', with the aim of making the population aware of the need to tackle excessive consumption and protect the aquifers, the main source of supply for the municipalities in the region.
The initiative is precisely born to respond to this detected increase in consumption and focuses on collective responsibility. “When the wells cannot rest, the aquifer suffers and recovery requires much more time than it takes to empty it,” warns the Mancomunitat.
The campaign also aims to make visible an often unknown reality: the water from the Plan comes entirely from underground aquifers, a limited resource that needs time to regenerate. Through educational materials and social networks, the evolution of well levels, the impact of peak consumption, and the need to reduce non-essential uses are explained.
Among the planned actions, the 100 Liters Challenge stands out, a participatory proposal that invites citizens to review their daily habits and incorporate savings measures that, added together, can have a global effect.
The Mancomunitat has called for a reduction in consumption, especially during nighttime hours and in the summer months, to avoid further pressure on the system. 'Without water there is no Plan,' recalls the campaign slogan, which synthesizes concern for a resource that is at the limit of its regeneration capacity.
