PalmThe proposed law on the constitutional reform necessary to provide Formentera with its own senator was approved this Tuesday with the votes in favor of the entire plenary except for Vox, which was against it because it claims that it would entail an unnecessary expense.

"It's a fair demand," said Llorenç Córdoba, the sole representative for Formentera in the Balearic Parliament, which currently supports the People's Party (PP). In this regard, he criticized Vox's stance: "I suppose they'll want to run in the elections afterward." The proposal seeks to amend Article 69.3 of the Constitution, which defines the representation of the provinces in the Senate and, in the case of the Balearic Islands, establishes a single senator for the Ibiza and Formentera group, meaning both islands share their representative. What was voted on today was the ratification of the proposal: another step in its legislative process. Several parties have promoted this proposal, such as Más per Mallorca – through its representative in Congress, Vicenç Vidal – and Més per Menorca. However, the initiative dates back to 2018, when the plenary session of the Parliament approved this proposal with the support of Gent per Formentera (GxF) and the Socialist Party.
