PalmThe People's Party (PP) registered a proposed law on Wednesday to amend the Child Protection Law with the aim of preventing cases like that of Miquel Roldán, the teacher convicted in Son Sardina, from happening again. As explained by PP spokesperson Sebastià Sagreras, the law seeks to prevent those convicted of child abuse from working as teachers or holding any profession that involves contact with children and young people. "A loophole in the national law has led to incidents in the Balearic Islands like the one in Son Sardina," he explained, emphasizing the need to protect children.

"This initiative stems from the outcry of the educational community, especially families, who have been demanding greater protection and guarantees for minors for months," explained Sagreras. Roldán is a teacher who was convicted of bullying a minor. After serving his sentence, which did not include disqualification from his position, he regained his job, generating controversy among the parents of the children he was supposed to teach, who organized to keep their children home from school for several weeks. "Under the current legislation, the Ministry of Education and schools are powerless in cases like this, where the court ruling does not include the express disqualification of the convicted professional," he stated. Sagreras recalled that the Minister of Education, Antoni Vera, sent a letter to the Minister of Education, Pilar Alegría, requesting a legislative amendment that would allow action in this area, but her request was denied. "Given the inaction of the Sánchez government, the Balearic PP has decided to take the initiative and promote its own reform that expands the list of offenses that prevent access to professions, trades, or activities involving regular contact with minors, incorporating those already included in the category of harassment," he explained.
