At last, housing!

PalmaI was already worried and I think I wasn't the only one. Because the housing issue has become very complicated. But it turns out that this week, at an event of the People's Party at the Espai Quetglas, they said it loud and clear: Finally, housing!

The proposal, which brought together the top representatives of the Balearic PP, consisted of explaining that now that in principle Alberto Núñez Feijóo is supposed to reach the national government, housing will arrive. If this is to be true, I am convinced that millions of people throughout Spain will massively vote for the PP. Because, without a doubt, it is the most important social problem that the population suffers from.

However, there are a couple of things that should be said and that I am not sure were raised at the aforementioned pre-election meeting. One is that exclusive competence in housing matters lies with the autonomous communities. The second part of the equation that needs to be clarified is that 11 of the 17 communities that the Spanish state has, including, as we know, the Balearic one, are governed by the People's Party. And the third is that none of the 11 has decided to apply – Galicia has done so in two cities – the optional measures, such as capping rent prices, which the state regulation proposes.

Therefore, at the very least, it is a bit strange that now a new central ruler must come without competence to solve an autonomous problem, even though the State can also play a role. It is a pity that during the election campaign citizens have to be bombarded by demagoguery and falsehood. Housing is a very complex issue. It needs sustained solutions over years. For example, building many more social housing units than those built by the current Government. Only then will housing, in the end, arrive, whether Feijóo arrives or not.
